Happy 5th Birthday Whitby WI!

What a joyous way to begin our May meeting – Whitby WI’s 5th birthday! In order to celebrate this auspicious landmark in style, Judith Owen, Sue Walsh and Lynn Walker made, decorated and presented three stunning cakes that were worthy of a Bake-Off showstopper!  Once the candles were lit, we all sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to us! Five of our original members shared their memories of gathering interested women together in the library and setting up a ‘town’ WI. It was a great undertaking, as only one person in the group had had any experience of the WI. Undaunted, and with the help of Advisors, Whitby WI was formed. Many memories of these early experiences included the friendship afforded by the WI, skills and opportunities to learn, difficulties we have had with venues, the importance of contributing to the committee and shaping our WI and favourite speakers. Food and drink featured highly in this! We continue to enjoy stimulating speakers, great opportunities for social time, links with other WIs and community groups and campaigns. Here’s to our next 5 years.

December 2107  Caedmon Students wise up to Food Waste!

Food Waste Food Waste

Students at Caedmon College in Whitby, have learnt valuable lessons about how not to waste food and save money.

40 students from Year 7 took part in two workshops organised by Whitby and District Rotary Club, in collaboration with Whitby WI and North Yorkshire Rotters (from North Yorkshire County Council).

One of the workshops, held in December, involved cookery demonstrations making tasty meals from leftovers. Sue Clarke from Whitby WI showed the students how to make tomato and lentil soup with over ripe tomatoes and vegetable stir fry using vegetables often thrown away.

Nick Hutton, from Whitby and District Rotary Club made scrumptious bubble and squeak - a great way of using up leftover mash, sprouts and cabbage.

Students also learned the importance of not cooking too much in the first place and were given their own spaghetti measures and rice cups to take home to help control portion sizes.

A second workshop covered recycling and composting as well as food waste. Students were shown how to make a large wormery which helps to make compost from leftover vegetables, egg shells and paper waste. They then constructed a mini wormery to take home and look after and made their own smoothie by pedalling a bike to power the blender. Ripe fruit is ideal for making smoothies rather than being thrown away.

Prior to taking part in the workshops, the students kept a diary for a week – setting out what food was wasted and why.

Student Amber Jackson said: ‘At first we didn’t think it was going to be very tasty but it all turned out to be delicious and everyone loved it!’

Anna Derham also benefited hugely from the event. She said: ‘Our visitors made it an enjoyable yet educational experience. We will all think twice the next time we go to throw food out. We will check we eat the oldest food first and not cook too much in the first place’.

Around 7.2m tonnes of food each year is thrown away each year in the UK and wasting this food costs the average family around £480 per year. Yorkshire generates enough food waste to fill York Minster one-and-a-half times every year (North Yorkshire Rotters/WRAP statistics).

Tuesday November 28th 2017 - Mystery Evening

Intrepid Whitby WI members braved the inclement weather and met under the clock at Meadows in Skinner Street for the Mystery Evening.

An evening session in 'Doodlepots' had been organised! This was a lovely creative evening, giving members the opportunity to produce their

own decorated ceramics. Some members painted a wide variety of Christmas themed items, others did their own thing! It will be exciting to see

the finished results as the fired glazes look very different. The mystery event was enjoyed by all. Huge thanks to the committee members who baked and brought refreshments for everyone. A great way to cheer us up on a miserable November Evening!
